Who runs what
Uttlesford District Council is responsible for planning applications, housing, and waste and recycling collections. Essex County Council is responsible for roads, schools, social care and libraries. Town and parish councils look after local matters such as allotments, play areas and community halls, and every town and parish council in the district is elected on the same day.
What happened to the new West Essex council?
In March 2026 the Government decided to replace the councils in Essex with five larger ones, with Uttlesford in a new West Essex council. On 7 September 2026 it withdrew that decision and began a review.
So the May 2027 elections are for the existing councils, on the existing boundaries.
