Priority 1 of 6
Homes people can afford
A better deal for tenants, more social and affordable housing, and homes that are cheap to heat.
What we will work for
- A better deal for tenants
- More social and affordable housing
- Funding from developers for the facilities families need
- Insulation to reduce heating bills
- Energy efficient new homes with the highest standards of insulation
Why it matters here
Homes should be affordable to live in, as well as to buy or rent. That means homes that are cheap to run, with very low fuel bills, and built so that they do not pass pollution costs on to our children and grandchildren.
For years, planning policy in Uttlesford has added to car dependency, congestion and pollution. We want new homes built where there is clean, sustainable transport, with developers paying for the facilities families need.
Before any new houses are built, we would start by asking why we want them and why people would choose to live in them. We will focus on quality of life and the environment around us, not just on housing numbers.
Modern building methods and materials make it possible for homes to be both energy efficient and affordable. All new homes should be built to zero carbon standards now, and there should be help to insulate and retrofit the homes we already have.
