Working for a fair and just society

Two people handing over a book in a library.

Trilby Roberts and Edward Gildea presented the Saffron Walden County High School librarian, Justine Lister, with a collection of books about the contribution of black people to our history, economy, culture and their sacrifice in two World Wars.

Trilby spent 20 years working in Jamaica and the USA and is deeply concerned about the lack racial justice here in the UK. She drafted the motion condemning George Floyd’s murder and supporting the Black Lives Matter movement, which was passed unanimously by Saffron Walden Town Council last summer. Social justice is central to the Green Party so it was fitting that she should be presenting her collection of books to Justine, the day after the guilty verdict in the murder of George Floyd was delivered.

Edward was proud to present a book written by his brother, Professor Robert Gildea of Oxford University, which charts the brutal realities of decolonisation and neo-colonialism which have shaped the post war world, and how nostalgia for empire has bedevilled relations with Europe and played such a key role in the Brexit referendum.
